Talk UX Website illustrations
A series of illustrations to support information on the Talk UX website about an upcoming collaborative conference in Brighton UK.

Challenge
-
Ladies That UX Brighton were hosting an upcoming collaborative conference and required fresh illustrations on the Talk-UX website

-
The clients were looking for a shift from the previously used 'flat illustration' style from 2023 to a style which is more current and engaging
Results
-
A series of five illustrations: two main images and three small images created on Procreate, using contrasting textures and colours

-
Illustrations representing diverse range of human figures, which coincide with Ladies That UX Brighton's ethos of advocating and championing women and under-represented genders across all areas of UX
Initial Ideas
I began sketching some ideas relevant to the themes of the conference, intending on making the illustrations engaging and about collaboration and creativity.

Feedback
After a group discussion, the client fed back to me some comments on these images. The clients agreed that:
-
They were pleased with the hand-drawn aesthetic as opposed to the stock illustration styles used previously, and wanted to use the new style consistently throughout
-
The two left images are the strongest and the client would like them to be further developed, including at least one man’s arm and some different skin tones - can still be greyscale if you prefer
-
They were less keen on the figures 3 and 4, each depicting one individual, because the conference will be very hands-on
Development
Following the committee feedback, I developed two colour versions of the illustrations to give the clients some variety. Greyscale was suggested as an option if I preferred it but I wanted them to have colour, especially with the event taking place in a vibrant city such as Brighton. I compromised by using purple tones to have a “colour greyscale”.

After showing the options to the clients, they said that they prefer the blue and pink colour option for the illustrations because two contrasting colours are more eye-catching than shades of a single colour.
Second proposal : Three Small Illustrations
In addition to these two primary illustrations, the clients asked if I could replace three small images from a Talk UX conference held in Manchester in 2019 using my aesthetic.

Three Small Illustrations : Development
I approached this part of the project by sketching out a variety of ideas on Procreate, using black and the colour palette from my branding, which resonated with the palette in the illustrations from the Manchester event. By presenting more than one idea to the client, this offered them the option so that they could choose the strongest design.
Make Connections

Gain Insights

Get Inspired

Feedback
"I wonder if Rebecca could offer alternative options for the "Gain Insights" image. For me, the first one isn't easy to comprehend at first glance, and it's too similar to the "Make Connections" image; the second option is too similar to the "Get Inspired" image as it's a lightbulb."
Iterations - 'Gain Insights'
When coming up with a new design for "Gain Insights", I decided to use the magnifying glass as the main object as that hadn't been used in the previous designs. With the magnifying glass I decided to take the concept more literally, drawing an eye looking through. To add an insightful element, I used yellow in the first two images to echo that "lightbulb" moment without actually drawing the lightbulb.

Feedback
The feedback from the clients was a mixed on the eye/magnifier.
"I liked it, as it has a sort of quirkiness to it"
'"I wonder if an alternative would be possible as it doesn't gel with me"

"I think, it is up to you, but consider the time you have if you feel you have completed this task then we will stick with the eye/magnifier"
